چکیده

The fractional filtration efficiency for particles ranging from 5 nm to 100 nm was estimated based on previous publications. The downstream concentration and size distribution was calculated for each of four outdoor aerosols representing both urban and rural conditions. When interpreting data expressed as the total number concentration (dp>5 nm), the studied F7filter (corresponding roughly to MERV 13 according to the applicable US-standard) showed filtration efficiencies between 65% and 83%. The results also indicate that measurements with an instrument providing the number concentration of particles larger than 20 nm will underestimate the total UFP-filtration efficiency by about 10%-units, estimated as an average value for all of the studied filter classes.

Evaluation of Glass Fiber Hepa Filters as a Function of Media Velocity

The Department of Energy currently employs high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters in a variety of applications, such as particulate matter removal from ventilation air and treatment of off-gasses from storage or remediation of mixed wastes. Section FC of the ASME AG-1 Code addresses glass fiber HEPA filters and restricts the media velocity to a maximum of 5 ft/min. Advances in filtratio...

Estimates of HVAC filtration efficiency for fine and ultrafine particles of outdoor origin

This work uses 194 outdoor particle size distributions (PSDs) from the literature to estimate single-pass heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) filter removal efficiencies for PM2.5 and ultrafine particles (UFPs: <100 nm) of outdoor origin. The PSDs were first fitted to tri-modal lognormal distributions and then mapped to size-resolved particle removal efficiency of a wide range of ...

Improvement of Air Quality in Vehicle Cabins by Nanoparticle Filtration

A filter system is presented which allows the reduction of the concentration of ultrafine particles in vehicle cabins to very low levels. The original ventilation system is switched to the recirculation mode and all cabin intake air is supplied via a retrofitted filter system. Tests with a variety of different vehicles (from passenger cars to coaches) show the efficiency of the system. Filters ...

Ultrafine particle deposition in subjects with asthma.

Ambient air particles in the ultrafine size range (diameter < 100 nm) may contribute to the health effects of particulate matter. However, there are few data on ultrafine particle deposition during spontaneous breathing, and none in people with asthma. Sixteen subjects with mild to moderate asthma were exposed for 2 hr, by mouthpiece, to ultrafine carbon particles with a count median diameter (...

Soft-X-ray-enhanced electrostatic precipitation for protection against inhalable allergens, ultrafine particles, and microbial infections.

Protection of the human lung from infectious agents, allergens, and ultrafine particles is difficult with current technologies. High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters remove airborne particles of >0.3 μm with 99.97% efficiency, but they are expensive to maintain. Electrostatic precipitation has been used as an inexpensive approach to remove large particles from airflows, but it has a co...
